New York State Standards for Social Studies topics include the History of The United States and New York State, World History, Economics, Civics, Citizenship, and Geography. Students are expected to develop a deeper understanding of The United States' place in the world, the development of economic and governmental systems, changes across history and the impact of historical perspectives over time. Students will use a variety of skills to demonstrate an appreciation for diverse cultures and their contributions to society and learn how they may become active participants in government processes as responsible citizens.

Students in Florida are required to pass Civics End-Of-Course (EOC) Exams in Eighth Grade.
