The NYS Common Core Standards for Third Grade English Language Arts includes strategies to develop a deeper understanding of both fiction and non-fiction texts. Once a child enters Third Grade the philosophy of learning to read transitions to reading to learn. Students are expected to use metacognitive strategies to think about their own thinking. In order to do this they must learn to make connections with texts, be able to visualize or see what the author is describing, synthesize and summarize the author's meaning and purpose for writing. Students learn to dig deeper and do Close Reading to prove answers to varying types of questions. Teachers may explicitly teach Question/ Answer relationships and scaffold and model for their students the four main types of questions: Literal or "RIght There" Questions; Think and Search including Inferential Questions; Author and You; and, On Your Own in order for students to become strategic readers.
