Who are Middle School Students?Answering the question: Who are middle school students? Is as complex as the students themselves..
According to Nancie Atwell, author of In The Middle; New Understandings About Writing, Reading, and Learning students in middle school "experience confusion, bravado, restlessness, a preoccupation with peers and question authority. They are volatile and social." So with that said, how do we teach them? How can we relate to them with their ever changing moods? How can we show them that life has meaning and they can contribute in positive and meaningful ways? How can we make sure we do not alienate them? I have found that it is important to establish trusting relationships with middle schools students and some of the ways to do this are to acknowledge their feelings. Remember and understand that we too, as adults, were once struggling through adolescence; trying to discover who we were and what we wanted, and where we were headed regardless of our idealism.
