English Language Learners
The student population of the United States is changing and becoming more diverse. According to the US Department of Education, National Center for Educational Statistics, currently 10% of school age population enrolled in the United States are English Language Learners (ELLs) and are not able to demonstrate proficiency in the English Language. As a result, they struggle with the demands of the educational system.
Systems are being put into place to address the need to fill the gaps in education for learners whose first language is not English. The New York State Department of Education is currently engaged in writing new standards for Bi-lingual Education to ensure that no student is left behind. Current Regulations and Standards for LEP/ELLs may be found by clicking this link.
