The shifts and demands of the English Language Arts Common Core Standards for Second Graders include units of study that include a Listening and Learning Strand through Read Alouds and a Skills Strand.
Read Alouds are books and other resource materials that are read aloud by the teacher to the students to develop an appreciation for quality literature that is both informational and narrative in nature. Topics include Fairy Tales, Early Asian Civilizations, The Ancient Greek Civilization, Greek Myths, The War of 1812, Cycles in Nature, Westward Expansion, Insects, The Human Body, and Immigration.
The Skills Strand teaches the basic mechanics of reading. In other words; how to read. Phonics, Spelling, Grammar, and Writing are taught in this strand and students are expected to be able to decode the written materials they encounter.
